Seat: Spains Hall, Finchingfield, Essex. The Ruggles, later Ruggles-Brise, family bought Spains in 1760. Previously it had belonged to a family called Kempe, who built the earliest part of the present house in the 15th century and greatly added to it in the late 16th. Around the time of its acquisition by Samuel Ruggles a further extension was made. ‘Spains’ is a corruption of ‘de Ispania’, the name of the family who held the manor at the time of the Domesday survey. It was acquired by the KEMPEs some two hundred years afterwards.
